Lakshmi Mills

Coimbatore is known as the Manchester of the South - the epicentre of cotton and weaving industries. Amongst all the mills situated in and around the city, Lakshmi Mill is a landmark, being one of the oldest with its 100 year of history.

In 2019, The Lakshmi Mills Company restored a section of the mill transforming it into a shopping complex while retaining its unique architecture and character. XXL Collective contributed by proposing to wrap its entrance walls with a mural which would showcase the processes behind the textile production.

To do so, we invited artists from Aravani Art Project who unfolded over a 225 ft long wall, the history of weaving by framing the transition from handloom to spilling mills. They also gave a tribute to the workforce, who have been the torchbearers of this tradition, beginning the narrative from the cotton fields. The pastel color palette accompanies the industrial character of the Mill, enhancing its historical charm.
