Yok & Sheryo

Yok & Sheryo are an artistic duo based in New York City. They work across mediums of murals to 3D sculptures and moving images. Their styles are influenced by skateboarding graphics and pop illustrations. Sticking close to their roots, the duo experiment with ancient artisan techniques from lost eras and stylise them with a bold painting technique. The duo also derives inspiration from extensive travelling and use it to create a beautiful cacophony of old and contemporary. As a duo, they have showcased their work in festivals such as the Miami Art Basel, and the Moniker Art Fair amongst others.

Lodhi Art District

New Delhi, 2019

Inspired by the visual cues of vintage Indian matchboxes, the Yok & Sheryo mural at Lodhi Art District is embedded with a series of cryptic messages. These messages are meant to be evocative of Indian public service announcements - seen and heard in buses, trains, auto rickshaws, and now on social media.

F(r)iction at Kona

New Delhi, 2019

The duo transported the public to year 3001, where the world has degraded thanks to the attributes that make online culture; such as ‘memes’, ‘false news’, ‘idols’ and so forth. Enter: ‘Temple of Self Indulgence’ where the Nyan cat, once a cultural meme, narrates a commentary about our contemporary mercurial lifestyles; an era with inconsequential desires despite having access to vast knowledge and technology.

Sassoon Dock Art Project

MUMBAI, 2017

Intersecting mythology with urban scenarios, the Yok & Sheryo installation at Sassoon Dock Art Project was a tribute to the symbol of the fisherfolk livelihood: the boat. Using an actual dipaliatated boat from the docks, the duo created an imagery of Lord Vishnu with his loyal Makara, a creature that helps him travel through the sea. Here the boat, a symbol of the fisherman’s prosperity finds its ground in mythology, which is the core to indigious cultures and communities.
